However, as the 2024 NFL season progressed, certain aspects of Williams’ game raised questions about his immediate readiness to be the top quarterback in the league. Analysts noted that while Williams possesses elite physical traits, he exhibited tendencies to rely heavily on his improvisational skills, sometimes at the expense of structured play execution. Greg Cosell, an NFL analyst, pointed out that Williams is “more of a playmaker than a refined pocket quarterback who can consistently execute the subtleties, nuances and disciplines of the position.”
Additionally, Williams’ transition from USC’s offensive system, which lacked extensive NFL-style timing and progression concepts, presented challenges. His limited experience with under-center snaps and the need for development in timing and anticipation throws were areas identified for improvement. Cosell emphasized that Williams “did not see much… executing NFL pass game concepts where he had to hit his back foot and make timing window throws vs. zone coverage.”
These factors contributed to a perception that, despite his high ceiling, Williams required further development to adapt to the complexities of the NFL game. Consequently, while his potential remains significant, the immediate expectation for him to be the top quarterback was tempered by the recognition of areas needing refinement.
