The UConn Huskies made a bold and emphatic statement after their women’s basketball team secured the program’s 12th national championship, dismantling the South Carolina Gamecocks 82-59 in the NCAA Tournament finale on Sunday. Following the win, UConn took to social media platform X to proclaim themselves the “BASKETBALL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.”
With 12 titles now to their name, UConn holds the most championships in NCAA women’s basketball history. Their previous national titles came in 1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016—before their return to dominance this year.
Several prominent voices backed UConn’s claim, including Dan Hurley, head coach of the Huskies’ men’s basketball team. Hurley echoed the sentiment on X, writing: “[UConn women’s basketball] 12-Time National Champions!! Undeniably the Basketball Capital of the World…Storrs, Connecticut.”
Head coach Geno Auriemma earned his 12th title alongside standout performances from his stars. Azzi Fudd and freshman Sarah Strong each dropped 24 points in the championship game, while Paige Bueckers added 17 points to cap off her comeback journey in style.
Given the legacy, dominance, and unmatched success of the program, UConn’s claim as the basketball capital carries serious weight. With the Lady Huskies once again reigning supreme, it’s hard to argue against Storrs, Connecticut being at the very center of the basketball universe.
