Michigan football is actively competing with several powerhouse programs to secure a commitment from five-star running back Savion Hiter for the 2026 recruiting class. Hiter, hailing from Woodberry Forest, Virginia, is widely regarded as the top running back prospect in his class. Standing at 6 feet and weighing 200 pounds, he has showcased exceptional talent, rushing for 1,187 yards and 11 touchdowns during his sophomore season in 2023, along with two kick return touchdowns.

In August 2024, Hiter narrowed his list of potential schools to five: Michigan, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, and Tennessee. Michigan’s inclusion is significantly attributed to the efforts of running backs coach Tony Alford, who previously recruited Hiter during his tenure at Ohio State. This existing relationship has bolstered Michigan’s position in Hiter’s recruitment.

Hiter has expressed admiration for Michigan’s program, noting the welcoming environment and the potential fit within their offensive scheme. He attended the “BBQ at the Big House” recruiting event in July 2024 and is scheduled to return for the game against Michigan State later this month. These visits indicate a strong mutual interest between Hiter and the Wolverines.

Competing against formidable programs like Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, and Tennessee, Michigan faces a challenging battle for Hiter’s commitment. Each of these schools has a storied history and a proven track record of developing NFL-caliber running backs. However, Michigan’s recent success, including a robust running game and a culture of physical football, aligns well with Hiter’s playing style.

As Hiter progresses through his junior year, his recruitment remains a focal point for Michigan’s 2026 class. The combination of Coach Alford’s recruiting acumen and the program’s alignment with Hiter’s aspirations positions Michigan as a strong contender in this high-stakes recruitment battle.
