Indiana University has faced several instances where basketball players were suspended due to off-court issues, particularly following games against Purdue University. These suspensions have often been linked to violations of team rules or legal infractions, leading to significant consequences for the players involved.

In one notable case, forward Devin Davis was suspended from all basketball activities after being cited for marijuana possession. Campus police discovered marijuana in Davis’s backpack following a complaint about the smell of marijuana smoke emanating from an on-campus apartment. Davis had previously missed an entire season due to a severe head injury sustained when he was struck by a car driven by his teammate, Emmitt Holt. Holt faced charges of illegal consumption for his role in the incident. In another instance, guard Devonte Green was suspended and did not travel with the team for a game against Northwestern. The suspension was due to Green not meeting the standards expected of members of the program, though specific details were not disclosed. At the time, Green was averaging 7.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, making his absence significant for the team’s performance. Additionally, five players—Xavier Johnson, Parker Stewart, Michael Durr, Khristian Lander, and Tamar Bates—were suspended for not adhering to team curfew rules. This suspension led to a loss against Northwestern, as the team had to play with a reduced roster. Coach Mike Woodson emphasized the importance of following team rules and indicated that decisions regarding the players’ future roles would be determined based on their adherence to program standards. These incidents highlight the challenges Indiana University has faced in maintaining discipline within its basketball program. The suspensions not only affected the individual players but also had broader implications for team performance and the university’s reputation. The administration and coaching staff have consistently emphasized the importance of upholding team standards and the consequences of failing to meet them.
