In a significant development for college football, former Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. has transferred to Louisiana State University (LSU). Van Buren, who started eight games as a true freshman for the Bulldogs, announced his decision on December 15, 2024.

During his tenure at Mississippi State, Van Buren completed 140 of 256 passes, amassing 1,886 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also showcased his mobility by rushing for five touchdowns. His performance was particularly notable after stepping in for injured starter Blake Shapen early in the season.

Van Buren’s transfer to LSU comes at a pivotal time for the Tigers. The current quarterback roster includes starter Garrett Nussmeier, who has confirmed his return for the upcoming season, and former Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann. Notably, LSU’s 2025 recruiting class had not secured a quarterback following Bryce Underwood’s decommitment in favor of Michigan. Van Buren’s addition provides depth and competition to the quarterback position, which is crucial for the team’s offensive strategy.

Expressing gratitude towards the Mississippi State community, Van Buren stated, “My family and I are forever thankful to coach [Jeff] Lebby, the staff, my teammates, the administrative team, and the professors for their contributions to my growth as an individual.” He added, “For the past year, we have worked arm in arm to generate some memorable moments in coach Lebby’s first year, and I am confident there is more greatness to come from the program.”

Van Buren, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound quarterback from Bowie, Maryland, was a four-star prospect who initially committed to Oregon before signing with Mississippi State. His decision to transfer to LSU is seen as a strategic move that could enhance his development and provide the Tigers with a talented and versatile quarterback option for the future.

This transfer is expected to have significant implications for both programs. LSU gains a promising quarterback with SEC experience, while Mississippi State will need to adjust its quarterback plans for the upcoming season. Van Buren’s move underscores the dynamic nature of college football rosters in the era of the transfer portal, where player mobility can rapidly alter team compositions and strategies.
