Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope has achieved a significant recruiting victory by securing commitments from top-tier in-state talents, notably five-star guard Jasper Johnson and four-star center Malachi Moreno, for the 2025 class.

Jasper Johnson, a Lexington native and the top-ranked player in Kentucky for the 2025 class, committed to the Wildcats in September 2024. Johnson, a five-star recruit per the 247Sports Composite, chose Kentucky over Alabama, Arkansas, Louisville, and North Carolina. His decision was influenced by his deep-rooted connection to the state and the program, stating, “I always wanted to be able to play for the University of Kentucky.”

Malachi Moreno, a 6-foot-11 center from Great Crossing High School in Georgetown, announced his commitment to Kentucky in August 2024. Ranked No. 26 nationally in the 2025 class, Moreno selected the Wildcats over programs like Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, and North Carolina. His commitment underscores Pope’s emphasis on retaining top local talent.

Pope’s proactive approach extends beyond these commitments. He has been actively pursuing other elite prospects, such as five-star forward Nate Ament. Pope’s attendance at Ament’s senior night and personal engagement highlight his dedication to recruiting top talent.

Additionally, Kentucky is in contention for five-star forward Caleb Wilson. Predictions favor the Wildcats, especially after Wilson canceled visits to other programs and attended Kentucky’s victory over Duke. Securing Wilson would further bolster Kentucky’s 2025 class.

These recruiting successes reflect Pope’s commitment to revitalizing Kentucky’s basketball program by focusing on elite talent, particularly from within the state. This strategy not only strengthens the team’s roster but also reinforces the Wildcats’ prominence in college basketball.
