Xavier Booker, a former five-star recruit, has announced his decision to transfer from Michigan State University to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) men’s basketball program. This move comes after a freshman season where Booker averaged 3.7 points and 1.7 rebounds over 9.3 minutes per game.

During his time with the Spartans, Booker faced challenges in securing a consistent role. Initially starting as the power forward, he experienced a slow start, leading to a transition to a bench role. However, he showcased significant improvement in subsequent games, notably scoring 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting in an overtime victory against North Carolina and demonstrating his three-point shooting ability against Minnesota.

In the offseason, Booker dedicated himself to enhancing his physicality and skills. He added 20 pounds of muscle, bringing his frame to 6-foot-11 and 245 pounds, and worked on his ball-handling abilities. Notably, he trained with NBA players, including Jaren Jackson Jr., to refine his game.

UCLA’s head coach, Mick Cronin, has been proactive in utilizing the transfer portal to strengthen the Bruins’ roster. The team has added several transfers, including Skyy Clark from Louisville, Tyler Bilodeau from Oregon State, and Kobe Johnson from USC. These players have already made notable contributions in exhibition games, indicating a positive impact on the team’s performance.

Booker’s decision to join UCLA aligns with his aspiration for a more prominent role on the court. With his enhanced physique and refined skills, he aims to contribute significantly to the Bruins’ pursuit of success in the competitive Big Ten conference.
