Mike Shula, former head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, has been appointed as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. This announcement follows the departure of Dowell Loggains, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Appalachian State University.
Shula’s tenure with the Gamecocks began in March 2024 when he joined as an offensive analyst. He was promoted to senior offensive assistant coach prior to the 2024 fall camp, where he worked closely with the quarterbacks. His guidance was instrumental in the development of redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers, who earned third-team All-SEC honors and was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 2024.
Under Shula’s leadership, the Gamecocks concluded the 2024 season with a 9-3 record, securing victories in their final six games, including four against ranked opponents. The team’s offensive performance, particularly the development of the quarterback position, was a significant factor in this successful run.
Shula’s coaching career is distinguished by extensive experience in both collegiate and professional football. He served as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2003 to 2006, achieving a 26-23 record. Following his tenure at Alabama, Shula transitioned to the NFL, holding various coaching positions, including offensive coordinator roles with the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants. Notably, during his time with the Panthers, he was named Offensive Coordinator of the Year by Pro Football Focus in 2015, a season in which the Panthers reached Super Bowl 50.
In his new role at South Carolina, Shula inherits an offense that has shown promise, particularly with the emergence of quarterback LaNorris Sellers. The Gamecocks are poised for continued success under Shula’s guidance, with expectations for further development in their offensive strategies and player performance.
The Gamecocks are scheduled to face Illinois in the Citrus Bowl on December 31, 2024, marking a significant opportunity for Shula to make an immediate impact in his new position.
