Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham believes he performs best as an attacking player but is open to taking on a deeper role to support his teammates and help the team achieve victories.
Bellingham played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s Champions League and LaLiga double last season, but his influence has waned since moving to a less offensive position following the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.
The 21-year-old made an electrifying start in Spain, scoring eight goals in his first nine LaLiga matches last season. However, his output this campaign has slowed, with just two goals in nine games, despite scoring in consecutive matches this month.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Bellingham reflected on his evolving role: “It’s been like any other adaptation. The dynamic, style, and approach have shifted, but I’ve shown I can perform in various positions. I prefer playing further up the pitch, but for me, it’s not about preference.
“I’m ready to play wherever I’m needed and won’t let the position affect my mindset. We set the team up to win, and that’s the priority. Last summer, I joined as the club lost Karim Benzema, one of its all-time greats. Filling that gap required a shift in my role to contribute more goals.
“This season, we’ve brought in one of the best players of this generation, who has an incredible goal-scoring record. My role naturally changes with that, and I’m fully prepared to adapt.”
Real Madrid will face Liverpool in a highly anticipated Champions League clash on Wednesday before hosting Getafe in a LaLiga fixture on Sunday.
