Indiana University’s football program has made significant strides in strengthening its secondary for the upcoming seasons through both high school commitments and strategic acquisitions from the transfer portal.
High School Commitments:
Chris McCorkle III: In May 2024, Indiana secured a commitment from four-star cornerback Chris McCorkle III, marking one of the highest-rated recruits for their 2025 class. McCorkle, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 172 pounds, is ranked as the No. 247 national recruit and the No. 26 cornerback by 247Sports. He chose Indiana over offers from prominent programs, including Florida State, Florida, Iowa, and Michigan State.
Byron Baldwin: Baltimore native Byron Baldwin, a four-star defensive back from Calvert Hall High School, recommitted to Indiana in December 2024 after initially decommitting in October. Baldwin’s recommitment bolsters Indiana’s 2025 class, bringing additional talent and depth to the defensive backfield.
Transfer Portal Acquisitions:
Ryland Gandy: On January 6, 2025, former Pittsburgh cornerback Ryland Gandy announced his transfer to Indiana. Gandy, originally from Buford, Georgia, played in 29 games over three seasons with the Panthers, starting 13 games in 2024 and recording 40 tackles. With two years of eligibility remaining, Gandy’s experience is expected to make an immediate impact on Indiana’s defense.
D’Angelo Ponds: In May 2024, Indiana added cornerback D’Angelo Ponds, a transfer from James Madison University. Ponds earned Freshman All-American honors in 2023 and continued his impressive performance with the Hoosiers, including a standout game against Washington where he recorded two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. His addition has been instrumental in enhancing Indiana’s secondary.
These strategic additions reflect Indiana’s commitment to enhancing its defensive capabilities, particularly in the secondary. The blend of young talent from high school recruits and experienced players from the transfer portal positions the Hoosiers for a competitive edge in the upcoming seasons.
