In a significant development in college football recruiting, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood has decommitted from Louisiana State University (LSU) and committed to the University of Michigan. Underwood, a Belleville, Michigan native, is the top-ranked prospect in the 2025 class.

Underwood initially committed to LSU on January 6, 2024, marking a significant achievement for the Tigers. However, on November 21, 2024, he announced his decision to flip his commitment to Michigan, staying closer to home. He shared the news on social media with the caption “Hometown Hero.”

Several factors influenced Underwood’s decision. Michigan’s intensified recruitment efforts, including a competitive Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) package, played a crucial role. The Wolverines’ Champions Circle collective offered Underwood a substantial NIL deal, reportedly totaling $10.5 million, surpassing LSU’s $6 million offer.

Additionally, Michigan alumnus and NFL legend Tom Brady personally reached out to Underwood via FaceTime, offering to be a resource and sharing insights about the program. This personal connection further swayed Underwood’s decision.

Underwood’s commitment is a significant boost for Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class, elevating it from 15th to 9th in national rankings. He becomes the first No. 1 recruit to commit to Michigan since defensive lineman Rashan Gary in 2016 and the first five-star quarterback since J.J. McCarthy, who led the Wolverines to a national championship in 2023.

Underwood’s decision to stay in his home state underscores the importance of personal connections and strategic recruitment efforts in college football. His commitment is expected to have a lasting impact on Michigan’s football program in the coming years.
